Acapulco (map) is a city and major seaport in the Mexican state of Guerrero. Officially known as Acapulco de Juárez, it is on the Pacific coast of Mexico, about 300 km (190 mi) to the southwest of Mexico City.

Acapulco is best known as the oldest beach resort of Mexico. It became popular since the 1950's. Today Acapulco is still famous for its nightlife and entertainment, although nowadays most of the visitors come from Mexico itself.

The name Acapulco comes from the Nahuatl language meaning "at the big reeds". The "de Juárez" was added in 1885 in honor of Benito Juárez, the president of Mexico between 1858-1872.

The tourist belt of Acapulco is divided into two sections. The northern part of the Acapulco Bay is the older part of town. This is the section that was developed since the 1950's. Further south is the newer part of Acapulco which is today developed with luxury high-rise hotels and resorts.

Acapulco experiences a tropical wet and dry climate. There is a distinct wet and dry season. Temperature throughout the year is quite uniformly high, staying between 23°C and 31°C (73°F-88°F). The wet season is from June until October while the dry season is from November to May. September is the wettest month with 349 mm or 13.74 in of rain.

Going to Acapulco

By Plane The main gateway to Acapulco is the Juan N. Álvarez International Airport (ACA), located 26 km (16 mi) from Acapulco. The airport gets numerous flights from Mexico City. There are also international flights to Acapulco from Chicao, Dallas/Fort Worth, Montreal, New York City (Newark) and Toronto.

By Bus
There are regular buses between Mexico City and Acapulco. The fare for VIP buses is 520 pesos while for the regular buses, it is 395 pesos. The journey takes five to six hours.

By Car
You can drive from Mexico City to Acapulco in about three and a half to four hours. There is a four-lane expressway, the Autopista del Sol, connecting the capital with the resort city.
