More on Accrington
The history of human habitation in Accrington goes back to at least the Anglo-Saxon period, when a farmstead or village was established there. It was spelled variously through history, including Akarinton in 1194 and Acryngton in 1324, before arriving at its present form.
Accrington was only a village, albeit a significant one, until 1830, when the Industrial Revolution brought about rapid growth. Its geographic location where a number of streams meet makes it an ideal site for establishing mills, mostly factories producing cotton and dye. Accrington experienced a prosperous period due to this, particularly from the late 18th to the 19th century. The poor wages however caused a number of conflict to erupt between the employees and the mills. Strikes and even riots were commonplace during the 19th century.
Today Accrington is a small town with a number of chain outlets such as Boots, Subway, Dorothy Perkins, Costa Coffee, McDonald's and KFC. Petrol stations operating here include Shell, Esso, Texaco and BP.
