Alcester is an old market town in Warwickshire, England. Located at the confluence of the River Alne and River Arrow, it has a population of about 6,200 people. The town is about 13 km (8 mi) to the west of Stratford-upon-Avon.

Alcester traces its history to Roman times, when it was a walled Roman town and fort. A Benedictine monastery was established here in the 12th century by Ralph de Boteler. The monastery was eventually dissolved by King Henry VIII during the Suppression of the Monasteries of 1536 to 1541.

Alcester today has a number of beautiful and well-preserved historic buildings of the Tudor period. Of particular interest include those near the parish church as well as those in Butter Street and Malt Mill Lane. It also has a number of stately homes, some of which now National Trust properties.

Visiting Alcester

Alcester can easily be reached from Stratford-upon Avon on the A46 road heading west. If you are coming from London, take the M40 motorway to Junction 15 to continue west on the A46 road. You will pass Stratford-upon-Avon before arriving in Alcester.
