 Almere
Almere is the youngest city in the Netherlands. It was established in 1976, but was only made a municipality in 1984. But since then, it has grown to become the largest municipality in the province of Flevoland and the 8th largest in the Netherlands. Almere today has a population of about 185,000 (2011 estimate), and is projected to grow to 350,000 by 2030.

The city of Almere borders Lelystad and Zeewolde. It comprises the districts of Almere Stad, Almere Haven, Almere Buiten, Almere Hout, Almere Poort (under construction) and Almere Pampus (still in the design phase). It sits in the IJsselmeerpolders, on land that was originally intended for agriculture. However the rapid growth of nearby Amsterdam after the Second World War made the need for housing more pressing. As a result, the polders were turned into two towns, Lelystad and Almere.
Going to Almere
You can take a train from Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam to Almere. If you are driving there from Amsterdam, take the A1 motorway and then continue on A6 to Almere.
