Alsace is one of the 21 metropolitan regions of mainland France. Covering an area of just 8,280 sq km (3,196.9 sq mi), it is the smallest region of metropolitan France. On the other hand it is also the sixth most densely populated, with a population of 1.8 million people.

The city of Strasbourg is the regional capital of Alsace. It is the political, economic and cultural capital of Alsace, as well as being its biggest city. It is also the seat of many important organizations and bodies.
Alsace is divided into two departments, Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin. These are further subdivided into 13 departmental arrondissements and 75 cantons. The countryside of Alsace is picturesque and dotted with charming villages, country churches and medieval castles.

By Plane
EuroAirport (BSL) is the main airport serving the region. This airport, which serves the surrounding areas of France, Switzerland and Germany. Easyjet flies there from London and Liverpool.
By Road
The A4 links Bas-Rhin department to Paris while the N59 road links Haut-Rhin to the west. The main highway from Switzerland is the A35.
