Amersham is ancient, with a history going back to pre-Anglo-Salxon times. In the early days it was known as Egmondesham. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it was recorded as Elmodesham.
Amersham comprises two main localities namely Old Amersham and Amersham-on-the-Hill. Old Amersham is on lower ground, being in the valley of the River Misbourne, while Amersham-on-the-Hill is on a small plateau on the north side of the valley.
