Amsterdam is today divided into 8 boroughs, called stadsdelen. They are called Centrum, Noord, Oost, Zuid, West, Nieuw0Westm Zuidoost and Westpoort.

Today Amsterdam remains the financial and cultural capital of the nation, headquarters to major Dutch companies and institutions. Its stock exchange, established in 1602, was the oldest in the world. It merged with the exchanges of Brussels and Paris in 2000 to form Euronext, and is today called Euronext Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) is the main airport serving the Netherlands. One of the busiest airports in the world, it is located 15 km to the southwest of the city. From the airport, you can catch a train to Amsterdam Central Station. Fare costs €3.80 one way and €7.00 return. The same journey by taxi will set you back €40-50.

Amsterdam Central Station is the main train station for Amsterdam and the Netherlands. It is located between the old center and the IJ waterfront. You can get there by train within two and a half hours to three hours from Brussels. There are services from most of the major cities in Western Europe.
