Angola was formerly a Portuguese colony. The city of Luanda was founded by the Portuguese explorer Paudo Dias de Novais in 1575. Angola was a Portuguese overseas territory from the 16th century until it attained independence on 11 November, 1975.

Angola was plunged into a civil war immediately after independence. The long-lasting civil war only came to an end on 22 February, 2002 after Jonas Savimbi, the leader of the UNITA political movement, was killed by government troops, paving the way for a ceasefire.

Today the political climate of Angola remains somewhat volatile. The president has so far refused to institute democratic processes, and the majority of Angolans live under trying circumstances.
