Arosa is a picturesque resort village in Graubünden canton, in eastern Switzerland. The village is located in a bowl within the Schanfigg valley, 1,775 m (5,823 ft) above sea level. It covers 42.54 sq km (16.42 sq mi) and has a population of 2,200 people (2011 estimate).
The village of Arosa dates back to the 13th century. It was first mentioned in 1330, when it appeared as Araus. Originally the people there spoke Romansh, but by the 14th century, the arrival of German-speaking settlers made German the predominant language of the village.

The warmest month in Arosa is July, when the average high temperature rises to 15.7°C (60.3°F). Coldest month is January, when the average low temperature drops to -6.8°C (19.8°F). July and August are the wettest month, each receiving 158 mm (6.22 in) of rainfall or more.Since the 19th century, Arosa developed as a health and skiing resort. Its position as health resort began when a sanatorium opened there in 1888. The village got a boost as a skiing destination when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote the Sherlock Holmes detective series, skied into Arosa from the mountains while holidaying in neighboring Davos.
