More on Australia
Australia covers an area of 7,617,930 sq km (2,941,299 sq mi). It has a population of 22.5 million people (2010 estimate), the majority of which live in the major cities located near the coasts. The landmass of Australia has seen human habitation going back thousands of years. It was sighted by Dutch explorers in 1606. Britain laid claim over it in 1770, and on 7 February, 1788, formally took possession of the land.
Australia became independent of the United Kingdom on 1 January, 1901, when its six colonies became a federation, forming the Commonwealth of Australia. Its capital, Canberra, was selected in 1908 and established on 12 March, 1913. The oldest British settlement in Australia, Sydney, is today its most populous city, with a metropolitan population of 4.5 million people.
Australia is a member of the United Nations, the G20, the Commonwealth of Nations, OECD and the World Trade Organization.

Australia is composed of four states, two mainland territories, namely the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory. In addition, the country administers external territories such as Christmas Island, Cocos Islands, Heard and McDonald Islands, and Australian Antarctic Territory, among others. Each state and major mainland territory has its own parliament.
Australia is the world's smallest continent as well as the world's largest island. It has a 34,218-km coastline, excluding the offshore islands. On the whole, the country is quite flat, with desert and semi-arid land occupying the largest portion of it. The Great Dividing Range is the main mountain range in the country. It runs parallel to the coast from Queensland through New South Wales and much of Victoria. The tallest mountain in Australia is Mount Kosciuszko, at 2,228 m (7,310 ft). It is shorter than Mawson peak on the remote Heard Island, which is 2,745 m (9,006 ft).
The climate of Australia is influenced by ocean currents. Seasonal low pressure results in cyclones in northern Australia. The northern part of the country experiences tropical climate. The central heart of Australia is covered by desert. The main cities of the country are on the southeastern portion of the continent, which enjoys temperate climate.

Visiting Australia
With the exception of nationals of New Zealand, all over visitors to Australia need to get a visa before arrival. Some nationals can apply for the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) which costs A$20, and may be applied online or through your travel agent.
Visitors from the European Union, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland can apply for the eVisitor pass, which is free and is identical to the ETA. If you do not qualify for either of these, you will need to apply for the non-electronic visa.
Australia has very strict quarantine requirements, especially regarding the bringing in of animal and vegetable products. In other words, you are not allowed to bring in any food, wooden products, seeds, and so on. All baggages are scanned and examined by sniffer dogs before allowed into the country.

Getting In
There are international flights arriving in Australia at its major cities, with Sydney having the biggest and busiest airport. Other entry points include Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Darwin. There are also direct flights to Adelaide, Cairns, the Gold Coast and Christmas Island.
A flight to Sydney takes about 3 hours from New Zealand, 7-11 hours from different parts of Asia, 14 hours from the west coast of the United States and South Africa, and up to 24 hours from western Europe. Sydney hotels are known for being busy, so it is key to book one prior to your arriving. If you need to transit from your international flight to a domestic one, note that the airports at Sydney, Brisbane and Perth have separate terminals while Melbourne, Adelaide, Darwin and Cairns airports have both in the same terminal building.
There are now a few low-cost airlines flying to Australia. Among them, AirAsia X flies from Kuala Lumpur to the Gold Coast, Melbourne and Perth, Tiger Airways flies from Singapore to Perth, Jetstar flies from Auckland, Bali Singapore, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Osaka, Phnom Penh and Tokyo to various cities in Australia.

Domestic Travel
Australia is a vast country, so going by road usually takes a long time between cities. At the nearest, it takes at least three hours to drive from Sydney to Canberra, and 9 hours from Sydney to Melbourne, and these are just rough estimates. Sydney hotels offer great hotel deals when you reach your destination.
Flying domestic is of course the fastest way to go from one city to the other. However, flights are not exactly cheap. To get the best deal, book way ahead of your departure. The four domestic airlines serving routes in Australia are Qantas, Virgin Blue, Jetstar and Tiger Airways.
