Auvergne is one of the 26 regions of France. A landlocked region, it is bordered by Centre to the northwest, Burgundy to the northeast, Rhône-Alpes to the east, Languedoc-Roussillon to the south and Midi-Pyrénées to the southwest and Limousin to the west.

Auvergne covers 26,013 sq km (10,043.7 sq mi). It has a population of 1.3 million people (2011 estimate). The regional capital is the city of Clermont-Ferrand.

It is surprising to note that the terrain of Auvergne is volcanic, though it is safe to say that none of the volcanoes of Auvergne has erupted in the past 6,000 years. Nonetheless Auvergne is the largest volcanic region in Europe.

How to go to Auvergne

By Road
Going by road is the most practical way to explore Auvergne. It is three hours from Paris on autoroute A71 and two hours from Lyon on autoroute A72.
