Baden is a health resort town in Aargau canton, Switzerland, about 25 km (16 mi) northwest of Zürich. Located at an altitude of 381 m (1,250 ft) above sea level, Baden covers 13.17 sq km (5.08 sq mi) and has a population of 18,000 people (2011 estimate). The name Baden means "baths". It refers to the many mineral hot springs in the area.

The hot springs of Baden has been known and used for therapeutic purposes since Roman times. During the Middle Ages, Baden grew to become an important trading town owing to its position on the River Limmat. The prosperity of this period is reflected in the beautiful houses in its Old Town today.

Today, in addition to being a health resort, Baden also has a thriving industry based on electro-mechanical engineering. The town also has a casino, drawing visitors from across the region.

Most of the people of Baden speak German as their first language (83.8%) followed by Italian (3.3%). 43.4% of the population are Roman Catholic while 28.5% attend the Swiss Reformed Church.

Sights & Attractions in Baden

  1. Baden Spa
    The spa of Baden occupies a bend of River Limmat. The springs here spout hot sulphur-rich water effective for treating rheaumatism and respiratory ailments.

  2. Holzbrücke
    An attractive single-span wooden bridge across River Limmat built in 1810.

  3. Landvogteischloss
    A huge 15th century castle on the east bank of River Limmat. It was occupied by the bailiffs of Baden until 1798, and today houses the museum of local history.

  4. Museum Langmatt
    This early 20th century mansion, once belonging to art connoisseur Sidney Brown, today houses an outstanding collection of French Impressionist paintings, including works by Corot, Monet, Pissarro and Renoir.

  5. Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt
    The Church of the Assumption, Baden's parish churchg, was built in the 15th century and renovated a few times since. Originally Gothic in design, it acquired Baroque and Neo-Classical elements during later renovations.

  6. Ruine Stein
    This is the remains of the castle overlooking Baden. The ruins date back to the 13th century although the original foundation dates to the 10th century.

  7. Schweizer Kindermuseum
    Museum showcasing the various aspects of childhood, with displays on children's mental development and education.

  8. Stadtturm
    Medieval tower built in the 15th century that stands guard over the entrance of the Old Town. It has four corner turrets and topped with a belfry.
