More on Barranquilla

Barranquilla experiences a tropical savanna climate. Temperatures are usually high the whole year round and humidity is also fairly high. Average temperatures range from 24°C (76°F) to 33°C (91°F). October is the wettest month, receiving 178 mm (7.01 in) of rain, while February and March are the driest, with only 1 mm (0.04 in) of rain.

Unlike most other cities in Colombia, Barranquilla was not established during the Spanish colonial times. There wasn't a pre-Columbian settlement in the area either. The area was an landing site for canoes into the interior. A hacienda was established there by Nicolás de Barros between 1627 and 1637, however the town of Barranquilla was only established in 1813.

In the aftermath of World War I, waves of immigrants began pouring into Barranquilla, initially from Europe and subsequently from the Middle East and Asia. By the 1940s it had become the second largest city in Colombia. However widespread corruption led to a decline in the standard of living.

Today Barranquilla remains one of the most important industrial and port cities in Colombia. It is also the venue for the Carnival of Barranquilla, a folk and cultural festival that has been recognized by UNESCO since 2003.
