More on Basildon
Basildon was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Belesduna. This is the earliest mention of the town which is believed to have been established during the Anglo-Saxon period. Little is known about Basildon until the 19th century, when the construction of railway lines helped to propel its growth, albeit as a dormitory for people working in London.
Much of the development in Basildon, particularly in the post-World War II decades, centered on housing the people from overcrowded London. As a result, the residents of Basildon often have a closer affinity with London than they do with their fellow Essexmen.
