More on Beverley

The town of Beverley dates back to the Anglo-Saxon period. It was founded in the 7th century, and was within the Anglian kingdom of Northumbria. In the beginning the town was called Inderawuda. One of the first buildings to be erected there was a church dedicated to St John the Evangelist. It was established by the Bishop of York, who came to be known as St John of Beverley.

In the AD 850s, the settlement that has developed around the monastery seemed to have been abandoned in a hurry. Historians believe that this was due to the invasion staged by the Norse Vikings, then then established the Kingdom of Jórvík in the area.

By the time of the Norman Conquest, the town of Beverley was growing again. Many people came to settle there upon hearing about the miracles carried out by St John of Beverley. They also attempted to reinstate Viking rule, which earned them the wrath of the Normans. The town would have been obliterated had not the Normans learned about the miracles by St John of Beverley.

Beverley became a pilgrimage destination in the medieval era until the Reformation, which brought an end to many such traditions. The impact was severe, causing a decline in the town's economy. The local Cardinal John Fisher was martyred for refusing to accept the Tudor King Henry VIII as head of the Church of England.

Today Beverley relies on its history as a religious center to be a regional tourist destination. Visitors come here to visit its many religious buildings as well as the Beverley Racecourse.
