More on Bexhill-on-Sea

Bexhill-on-Sea was established in AD 772, when it received its charter granted by King Offa II of the Kingdom of Mercia to Bishop Oswald to build a church. The discovery of primitive boats in the area suggests that the site may have been inhabited even earlier than that.

As with many coastal villages in England, Bexhill-on-Sea was one of the sites where smuggling activities were historically being carried out, particularly in the 17th to 19th centuries.

At the turn of the 20th century, in addition to being a fashionable seaside resort, Bexhill-on-Sea was also being promoted as a destination for motor races. The very first automobile racing on British soil was held here in May, 1902. There were plans to create a racing circuit in town, but it never materialize, and the motoring sport eventually relocate to the Brooklands circuit in 1907.
