More on Bridgetown

Bridgetown was founded in 1628 by Charles Wolverstone. Although at that time the area appeared uninhabited, the English settlers discovered a primitive bridge which was built by the natives that once lived there. This led the settlement to be called Indian Bridge, before later being renamed Bridgetown.

Bridgetown is the only place outside of mainland America that George Washington has ever visited. The house where he stayed is still standing today, and is preserved as a historic monument. This and other historic buildings of Bridgetown were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.
