Bucaramanga is a major city in northeastern Colombia. It is the provincial capital of Santander department. The city covers 165 sq km (63.7 sq mi) and has a population of 608,000 people (2011 estimate), within a metropolitan area of 1.2 million people. With some 160 public parks, it is also called La Ciudad de Los Parques, or City of Parks.

The city of Bucaramanga has spread out to include surrounding towns of Floridablanca, Girón and Piedecuesta, which together forms the Bucaramanga metropolitan area. The oldest of these towns is Girón, established even earlier than Bucaramanga, which was founded in 1622. Bucaramanga only overtook Girón in size in the early 19th century.

Located on a plateau in the Cordillera Oriental of the Andes, 959 m (3,146 ft) above sea level, Bucaramanga has a pleasant tropical monsoon climate with average temperatures of around 22°C. There are two wet seasons in a year, around March to May and around October to November. April is the wettest month, receiving 158 mm (6.22 in) of rain.

Palonegro International Airport (BGA), located 45 minutes from downtown Bucaramanga, receives flights from Barranquilla, Bogotá, Cartagena, Cúcuta, Medellín, Panama City and Santa Marta, among others.
