Hostels and guesthouses can be found throughout Italy. They offer accommodation to travelers on a low budget. In many Italian cities, you can get a bed for just €12 per night - much cheaper than the cheapest pensioni. The drawback is that this will most likely be a bed in a single-sex dormitory where everybody has to wait his turn to use the bathroom.

There are also hostels and guesthouses offering private rooms, the majority without attached bathrooms, but the higher-priced ones are en suite. You can contact the Italian branch of the International Youth Hostel Association, called AIG, for details.
