Burwell is believed to have been established during the Anglo-Saxon period, as its name means "fort well". The village was first mentioned in 1060, and found its way into the Domesday Book under various spellings, including Burewelle, Burwella and Burwelle.

Burwell is located at the head of Burwell Lode, a man-made waterway to connects to the River Cam. The waterway has been round since Roman times, though the present course dates to the 17th century.

Burwell was the site of a tragedy called the Barn Fire on Cuckolds Row, where a fire during a puppet show killed 78 people. It was caused by a lantern that was accidentally knowed over.

Visiting Burwell

From London, take the M11 motorway and continue on the A11 road at Junction 9. The A11 continues as the A14. at Junction 37, head north on A142, then turn left to Windmill Hill (signage is poorly posted, right on the junction itself), which continues to the B1103 road heading west towards Burwell.
