Cannock was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. It probably dates from the pre-Norman period. Its name comes from Old English meaning hillock, and has evolved through various spellings including Chnoc, Cnot and Canot. Cannock remains a small rural village until the late 19th century, when it grew rapidly due to coal mining activities. Now coal mining is also a thing of the past. The last colliery closed down in 1993. Since then, Cannock has become somewhat of a dormitory for people working in surrounding towns and cities.

Visiting Cannock

From London take the M1 motorway to Junction 19, where you continue west on the M6 motorway. Exit the M6 at Junction 11, then head north on the A460 to the roundabout, and take the A4601 north till you reach Cannock.
