More on Carlisle

Carlisle traces its history to the 1st century AD, when the Romans established an outpost here, as part of Hadrian's Wall. The ancient Britons founded a village here from the Roman period until AD 875, when it was destroyed by invading Danes. After King William II of England conquered the area in 1092, he built Carlisle Castle. Carlisle Cathedral was built in 12th. It is the second smallest (after Oxford Cathedral) of the ancient cathedrals of England, while the smallest of all Anglican cathedrals is that of Derby.

The Local Government Act 1972 paved the way for the creation of the City of Carlisle, and it officially received city status on 1 April, 1974.
