Human habitation around Chagford goes back to prehistoric times. Archaeological remains has confirmed the existence of a Stone Age community that existed there 4000 years ago. The town developed as a tin mining area. It also had a trade in wool.

Today Chagford is an affluent community with high property prices and a vibrant street life. The town celebrates a biennial Chagford Arts Festival.

Visiting Chagford

If coming from Manchester, take the M5 motorway until Exeter, then continue on the A30 road until the interchange at Widdon Down. Continue south on the A382 road and follow signage to Chagford. Note that you are passing through country roads and the road signs are some times quite obscure.

  1. Endecott House
    16th century house at the edge of the town square, given that name in the 1990s in honor of John Endecott, one of the Pilgrim Fathers who came from Chagford.

  2. Jubilee Hall
    A village hall that also houses the public library.

  3. St Michael the Archangel Church
    Anglican parish church dating back to 1261, now a Grade I listed building.
