Chambres d'hôte in France
Chambres d'hôte is the French answer to the English bed-and-breakfast accommodation providers. There's no way for me to generalize what a chambre d'hôte will look like - it can well be a small cottage in the countryside or a grand château offering rooms with panoramic views. It could also be a working farm house, or fermes-auberges, with room to let. In any case, and more likely than not, the establishment will be a private home. The charm of this is that you often get to dine with the family.
There are some 25,000 chambres d'hôte in France, so there's plenty to choose. You can get more details about them from the Gites de France.
