More on Chernihiv

The city is one of the oldest in cities in Central Ukraine. Its history goes back over a thousand years. It was mentioned for the first time in AD 907, on the Rus-Byzantine Treaty. Its long history has given it many historic sights and beautiful heritage buildings, among them sacred Christian temples that are becoming increasingly popular tourist attractions.

Archaeological excavation has revealed evidence of human settlement in the area around Chernihiv at early as the 9th century. It was the seat of the Grand Principality of Chernigov in the 11th century. That was the golden age for the city, when its population peaked at 25,000 people.
