Chesterfield is a market town at the confluence of the rivers Rother and Hipper in Derbyshire, England. It has a population of 70,000 people (2012 estimate), making it the biggest town in Derbyshire, excluding Derby, which has city status.

Chesterfield dates back to 1204, when it received its market charter from King Joh. Since then, it has developed into a major market town with one of the biggest open-air market sites in Britain.

Sitting on a large coalfield, Chesterfield was a coal-mining town until the 1980s. Yet today there is little evidence of the past mining activities. The town has since moved on to embrance a largely services sector of economy.

From London, take the M1 motorway until Exit 29, then continue west on the A617 road till you arrive in Chesterfield.
