The name Chipping means "market place" in Old English. The town prospered in the Middle Ages through the wool trade, as reflected in the many fine houses along its High Street. In the early 20th century, it became a center for the Arts and Crafts Movement, after Charles Robert Ashbee moved there from the East End of London.
