Cienfuegos (map) is a city on the southern coast of Cuba. It is located on the northern shore of a lagoon-like bay called Bahia de Cienfuegos (also called Bahia de Jagua). It covers 333 sq km (128.6 sq mi) and has a population of 164,000 people (2011 estimate).

The city of Cienfuegos was originally named Fernardina de Jagua, in honor of King Ferdinand VII of Spain. It is located in an area called Cacicazgo de Jagua. The town was however later renamed Cienfuegos.

Cienfuegos has a well-preserved historic center which was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. In that same year the city was hit by Hurrican Dennis.

  1. Antiguo Ayuntamiento
    Provincial government assembly building at Parque Martí.

  2. Castillo de Jagua
    Fort erected to protect the bay and its inhabitants from pirates.

  3. Catedral de la Purísma Concepción
    The cathedral of Cienfuegos erected in the 19th century, one of the major buildings of the central square.

  4. Cementerio General La Reina
    City cemetery on the western part of Cienfuegos. Laid out in 1830, it is today a national monument.

  5. Cementerio Monumental Tomás de Acea
    A huge cemetery on the eastern part of Cienfuegos.

  6. Cueva de Martin Inferno
    Cave with some of the largest stalagmites.

  7. Huseo Histórico Naval Nacional
    This is the main naval museum of Cuba. It showcases documents related to the anti-Batista insurrection and the history of the Cuban navy.

  8. Museo Provincial
    Provincial museum housed in the former Casino Español, an eclectic-style building of the 19th century. It houses objects keepsakes for the wealthy families of 19th century Cienfuegos.

  9. Palacio de Valle
    Mansion of sugar baron Acisclo del Valle Blanco. Later it housed a casino, and today a restaurant.

  10. Palacio Ferrer
    Mansion of an early 20th century sugar baron José Ferrer Sirés, today houses the Casa Provincial de la Cultura.

  11. Parque Martí
    This is zero-kilometer for Cienfuego, marked by a compass point on the ground.

  12. Paseo del Prado
    Street in Cienfuegos with many historic buildings.

  13. Punta Gorda
    Upscale neighborhood on the southern tip of the Bay of Cienfuegos.

  14. Teatro Tomás Terry
    Theater named after the sugar baron whose will funded it.
