Ciudad Bolívar is a city in the state of Bolívar in eastern Venezuela. It covers 591 sq km (228.2 sq mi) and has a population of 351,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is located at a point in the Orinoco River where it narrows to about a mile across. This makes it an ideal spot for building a bridge across the river and the city emerged from the resulting trade.

The history of Ciudad Bolívar goes back to its founding in 1595, when it was originally named Santo Tomé de Guayana de Angostura del Orinoco, meaning "St Thomas of Guiana at the narrows of the Orinoco". The name was later shortened to Angostura in 1764, and remained so until 1846, when it was given its present name.

Located in the lowlands, at just 43 m above sea level, Ciudad Bolívar experiences a subtropical rainforest climate with temperatures that are fairly constant throughout the year, hovering between 26 and 30°C. Humidity is high and the annual rainfall totals about 1022 mm.

Ciudad Bolívar is the main city for the predominantly agricultural state of Bolívar. Among the crops grown in the region include maize, cassave, mango, yam and watermelon. Other activities include animal husbandry, including the raising of cattle and pig.

The historic center of Ciudad Bolívar is well preserved, and has become an increasingly popular tourist attraction. The city is also noted for its regional cuisine, particularly desserts and preserves made with cashew nuts. Other local dishes include cassava bread, Catara sauce and tortoise meat.

  1. Plaza Bolívar
    Originally known as Plaza de Armas and Plaza Mayor, this is the public square at the heart of Ciudad Bolívar. Dominating the square is the statue Venezuelan political leader, Simon Bolívar.

  2. Parochial House
    This is believed to be one of the oldest houses in Ciudad Bolívar, although its exact date of construction is unknown.

  3. San Isidro Museum
    Museum established at then hacienda where Simon Bolívar stayed when he was in Angostura.
