More on Clacton-on-Sea

Clacton-on-Sea is located between Jacwick and Holland-on-sea. The area has been inhabited since the Stone Age, as evidenced by the presence of a Paleolithic flint manufacturing site discovered there. A settlement known as Great Clacton was established by the Celts in around 100 BC. Roman presence in the are is unclear. It appeared in the Domesday Book as Clachintuna.

As with other coastal towns and villages in England, Clacton-on-Sea was involved in smuggling, particularly from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The smugglers dug tunnels as hideouts.

The present town of Clacton-on-Sea was founded quite recently, in 1871, by civil engineer Peter Bruff, with the intention of turning it into a seaside resort. His efforts proved fruitful. By the turn of the 20th century, Clacton-on-Sea was a flourishing seaside resort in Essex. The town enjoyed much popularity in the 1950s to 1970s, but like other seaside resorts in England, has somewhat lost its lustre in the 21st century.
