More on Coalville

Coalville was founded out of the coal mining industry, and is a relatively young town by English standard. Although the area has been inhabited since medieval times, the town of Coalville only came about after 1820, when mining engineer William Stenson (1770-1861) established the Whitwick Colliery there. The settlement that developed around the colliery took the name of his house, Coalville.

The main street of Coalville is Ashby Road. In the early days it was known as Long Lane. This street still holds some of the original miners' cottages. The railway line arrived in Coalville in 1833, helping to cement its position as a permanent settlement.

Coalville slipped into decline in the 20th century. As its importance dimmed, the railway lines connecting it to nearby Nuneaton and Shepshed were closed and dismantled. The town went into semi stupor, though efforts were being made now to rejuvenate it.
