Coleford is a small market town in Forest of Dean district, on the western part of Gloucestershire, England. It is just four miles to the east of the Welsh border, and has a population of around 8,500 people (2012 estimate).

Coleford got its name from two streams that flowed through it and were forded. These are not visible as they were culverted during the 19th century, though one was reopened for a while during maintenance work in 2001.Coleford is one of the oldest towns in the Forest of Dean district. Unlike many of the towns in the district, it was somewhat bypassed by the 19th and early 20th century coal mining industry, which brought much prosperity to towns such as Cinderford. As such, it fared better than Cinderford when the mining industry collapsed in the 1950s.

Visiting Coleford
From London, take the M40 motorway until Exit 8, then continue on the A40 road passing Oxford, Cheltenham and Gloucester. After the village of Huntley, turn left into the A4136 road (Longhope Road - signage is not prominent).
