Copenhagen (København) is the capital and biggest city in Denmark. Straddling the islands of Zealand and Amager, Copenhagen covers 455.61 sq km (175.9 sq mi) and has a population of 1.2 million people (2011 estimate). It is within a metropolitan area with a population of 1.9 million people.

Copenhagen is on the eastern part of Denmark. It faces the Øresund, the strait separating Denmark from Sweden. Bridging the two nations is the Øresund Bridge. Built in 2000, the 7.8 km bridge is presently the longest road-and-rail bridge in Europe.
The Copenhagen Municipality is composed of 10 official districts, and other outlying suburbs. The city observes the Central European Time, which is an hour ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+1) and two hours ahead during Daylight Saving Time of summer.
Copenhagen experiences an oceanic climate. It is in the path of the Atlantic low-pressure system, which affects its weather peatterns. June to August are the warmest month here, when the average high temperature reaches 20°C (68.5°F). January and February are the coldest months, when the average low dips to -2°C (28.4°F) and some times lower. Longest days are in June, which gets a total of 218 hours of sunshine, compared to December, which only receives 42 hours. Expect snow between December and March.
The oldest part of Copenhagen is called Middelalderbyen or Medieval City. The district with the most important historical buildings is Frederiksstaden. This is where you find the Amalienborg Palace and the Marble Church.

The history of Copenhagen is generally accepted to have started in 1167, when Bishop Absalon built a castle on the island of Slotsholmen. This is the site of present-day Christiansborg Palace. The city has many museums and parks as well as historic buildings.
Visiting Copenhagen
Most flights to Copenhagen land at Københavns Lufthavn, Kastrup, the busiest airport in the Nordic coountries. The main hub for Scandinavian Airlines, it also serves as hub for a number of smaller airlines. Almost 90% of the passengers passing through this airport are international travelers. The airport is right next to the Øresund Bridge, allowing convenient travel for visitors from the city of Malmö in Sweden. The airport receives flights to Copenhagen from most of the major cities of Europe as well as from other continents. Budget carrier EasyJet flies there from London-Stansted, Manchester, Milan, Geneva, Paris and Berlin.

From the airport, you can take a train to downtown Copenhagen. It takes just 12 minutes to travel to the Central Railway Station in Hovedbanegården in Copenhagen. Tickets are available from the vending machines. The fare is 36 Kr. From the central railway station, you can take the Copenhagen Metro to different parts of the city.
Exploring Copenhagen
The buses, trains and subway of Copenhagen operate on a zone system. A two-zone ticket costs 23 Kr and is valid for a hour of travel, with unlimited transfers. If you are planning to use public transport a lot, you can get the ten-trip ticket, which offers a 40% off the fare. Alternatively, you can also get the Copenhagen Card, which offer transport as well as free admission to 60 of the museums and sights within the city. The card costs 229 Kr for 24 hours and 459 Kr for 72 hours.
