More on Corozal TownModern Corozal Town dates back to the Maya period, when it may have been a city known as Chetumal, also called Santa Rita in Spanish. There is however no continuity between the settlement of Chetumal and that of modern Corozal. There is also a modern town called Chetumal, which means "place of the red wood", right across the border on the Mexican side of the Yucatán peninsula.
Corozal dates to the 1840s, when the mostly Mestizo refugees fled the Caste War of Yucatán. Even in Corozal the Mestizos still suffered attacks from the natives who were antagonistic against Mestizos, whom they regarded as allies to the Spaniards.
Visiting Corozal TownYou can reach Corozal Town by taking a bus from Chetumal in Mexico. The journey from there only takes about half an hour.
