World Travel GuidesCreating the World's Biggest Personally Written Travel Site

As an avid traveler and photographer, I spent many years traveling and taking photos. I enjoyed it very much and thought that that was everything I want from life.

Then one day I discovered the story of Tony and Maureen Wheeler. They are the founders of Lonely Planet, one of the most famous guidebooks in the world.

Reading their story gave me a new dream. I want to do what they did 40 years ago, using today's technology for today's travelers. I want to start my own online travel guide.

It will be a place where travelers and travel enthusiasts can reference for information of all the countries in the world. I want to describe all the places in the world, every country, every city, every sight. And not only that, I want to personally write everything. My ambition is that it becomes the world's biggest personally written travel site.

But it would be impossible for me to be everywhere and know everything about the world. A life time of travel is not enough. How do I overcome that? After thinking long and hard, I decided the only way was to open the site to inputs from other travelers and travel enthusiasts. Just as I freely share my information, I invite everyone to share with me their knowledge of the world, and I'll add it to the site for them (crediting their name if necessary) But unlike Wikipedia or TripAdvisor, I intend to write everything myself. I feel that is the unique aspect of my site.

But why would anybody freely provide me input? How do I encourage people to do so? After much thought, I decided that everything in my website should be made available under the Creative Commons license. In other words, people can freely take anything they want from this website and use it whether for their own travel, or their blog or website. The only condition is that they too release their work under the same license, so that the generosity is spread out and beyond. Let this be a site for travelers to help and be helped.

I call my website My World Travel Guides, not only because it will be "my" website, I also hope that every person who is involved in helping me, and every person who uses it for information, would feel that it is their "my" also.

I launched www.my-world-travelguides.com on 1 January, 2011. Since then, I have added over three thousand pages of content, with more being added every day. Although most of them were the result of my own research, I am delighted to receive inputs from generous strangers, who have continued to help me improve on the information provided.

If you have never visited My World Travel Guides, I welcome you to visit it. If you are interested in providing input, please read about how you can get involved here: http://www.my-world-travelguides.com/help-me-get-it-right.htm

How is My World Travel Guides different from Wikipedia or TripAdvisor? Well, with this website, even if you have no idea what to expect in a country, I will show them to you. My mission is to help you discover the world from the comfort of your home. I am doing it one destination at a time, bit by bit. With your help and involvement, perhaps it will be something that we will all be proud of together.
