Czech Republic is a small landlocked country in Central Europe. Covering 78,866 sq km (30,450 sq mi), it has a population of 10.7 million people (2011 estimate). The capital and largest city is Prague. The Czech Republic is bordered by Germany to the west and northwest, Poland to the northeast, Slovakia to the southeast, and Austria to the south.

In November 1989, the Velvet revolution returned the country to a liberal democracy and on 1 January, 1993, the country peacefully split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
