More on Dangriga

The history of Dangriga dates back to the 18th century, when it was settled by the Garinagu, (or Black Caribs, as they were known by the British) who relocated from neighboring Honduras. Until recently, Dangriga was the second largest town in Belize, until recently surpassed by Orange Walk Town. The town was renamed Dangriga in the 1980s. The word means "standing waters" in the Garifuna language.

Most of the people in Dangriga are Garinagu, with also large proportions of Kriols and Mestizos. As a result of this mix, the town has a rich heritage in Carib African musical and religious traditions.
