More on Darlington

Darlington dates back to the Anglo-Saxon era, when it was originally known as Daerthington, apparently meaning "place of the Deornoth people". During the Norman Conquest, the name has evolved to Derlinton. It continued to evolve, to Darnton, in the 17th century, before arriving at the present incarnation in the 19th century.

Darlington was just a small village into the 19th century, when it began to grow and industrialize. Its growth was credited to influential Quaker families who lived there. Many of the attractions and sights in town date from the mid 19th century, among them its clock tower (1864), the Market Hall (1860) and Backhouse's Bank building (1864). The 91-acre South Park took its present appearance in 1853.
