More on Darwen

The history of human habitation around Darwen goes back to the early Bronze Age, based on the discovery of a barrow dating to 2000 BC in the area. The Romans also left evidence of their presence, including remains of a Roman road.

As with many of the towns in Lancashire, Darwen had a tradition in spinning and weaving. This helped it become one of the centers of the Lancashire textile industry during the 19th century Industrial Revolution. Samuel Crompton, the inventor of the spinning mule, spent part of his life there.

The Darwen textile industry suffered a downturn following the First World War. This was worsened by a boycott of cotton goods by India. Nonetheless, the unemployed textile workers gave a warm welcome to visiting Mohandas K Gandhi in 1931.

Today Darwen is a quiet English town with a number of well-preserved historic sites.
