Darwin is the capital and biggest city in the Northern Territory, Australia. It is a city of 124,800 people located on the Timor Sea. Darwin covers an area of 112 sq km (43.2 sq mi). It is the smallest and northernmost state capital in Australia.

Although the Dutch has skirted the northern coastline of Australia by the 17th century, the city itself was named by Lieutenant John Lort Stokes in 1939 after the British naturalist Charles Darwin, who had sailed with him on an earlier expedition.

Darwin experiences a tropical savannah climate. Its calendar is split between a dry season and a wet season. The dry season runs from April/May to October while the wet season from October to April. During the wet season, there may be occasional tropical cyclones. Darwin is also prone to lightning strikes. The temperature in Darwin is fairly constant, ranging from an average low of 23.2°C (73.8°F) to an average high of 32°C (89.6°F). January is the wettest month in Darwin.

Going to Darwin

Darwin International Airport (DRW) is served by a number of airlines including Qantas, Jetstar, Indonesia AirAsia and Virgin Blue. It get regular scheduled flights from most major cities in Australia as well as from Singapore, Bali, Ho Chi Minh City, Manila and Dili.

Moving about in Darwin

The most convenient way to move about in Darwin is to drive. There are air-conditioned buses within the city. The fare is A$2.00 for a 3-hour transfer, or A$15 for a weekly pass.
