More on Dawley

The history of Dawley goes back a thousand years. It was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Dawley Magna ("Great Dawley") and Dawley Parva ("Little Dawley"), with are merged as one today.

After the Norman period, the town remained largely insignificant until the 17th century, when it began to develop as a site for coal and ironstone mining, and pottery works. Until the land was cleared for establishing the new town of Telford, the area was covered with clay mounts and pits, the result of the pottery industry.

Dawley received local media attention in 2010 when its townfolks decided to create a sign similar to the Hollywood sign, spelling out the name Dawley.
