Dnipropetrovsk (Ukrainian: Дніпропетровськ, Russian: Днепропетровск) is the third largest city in Ukraine. It covers 405 sq km (156.4 sq mi) and has a population exceeding a million people (2011 estimate), within a metropolitan area of 1.8 million people. The city is located on the Dnieper River in south-central Ukraine.

Dnipropetrovsk is a major industrial city in the Ukraine. During the Soviet era, it was one of the main centers for nuclear arms, military equipment and space exploration. It is the home of the ballistic missile manufacturer, Yuzhmash. Due to the sensitive nature of its industries, Dnipropetrovsk was a closed city until the 1990s.

Today Dnipropetrovsk is a modern industrialized city. It still suffers the effects of the Soviet industrial erra with factories that emit high levels of pollution, resulting in environmental degradation. A visit to Dnipropetrovsk provides a glimpse of the grim life in the Ukraine.

Dnipropetrovsk experiences a mix of temperate and continental climates. The warmest months are July and August. Average high temperature in July is 27.8°C (82°F). Coldest month is January, when the average low temperature drops to -5.65°C (21.82°F). June is the wettest month, receiving 59 mm (2.323 in) of rain.

  1. Preobrazhensky Cathedral
    This is the oldest cathedral in Dnipropetrovsk. It was built in 1787. The foundation stone was laid by Catherine the Great, Austrian Emperor Joseph III and Prince Grigory Potemkin. The building was only completed in 1835.
