East Midlands is one of the regions of England. It covers an area of 15,627 sq km (6,033 sq mi), making it the fourth largest of the nine regions of England. East Midlands has a population of 4.1 million people, making it the second least populated of the regions.

East Midlands includes the geographical centre of England, which is a spot on Higham on the Hill, in west Leicestershire, near the boundary with West Midlands. Much of the region is composed of limestone. It is one of the major cement-producing regions of the country.

East Midlands encompasses the areas within six ceremonial counties namely Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and most of Lincolnshire (for the purpose of this website, Lincolnshire is counted as being part of East Midlands).

Going to East Midlands

By Road
The M1 Motorway is the main expressway through East Midlands. It serves all the county towns except Lincoln. The A1 is an important highway for the east coast areas while the A46 highway follows a route that has been in place since Roman times, connecting the south west part of East Midlands to the north east.

By Plane
The East Midlands Airport, located in North West Leicestershire, is the main airport for East Midlands, particularly for the main cities of Derby, Leicester and Nottingham.

By Train
There are two main railway lines connecting East Midlands to London. The Midland Main Line runs from St Pancras Railway Station while the East Coast Mainline from King's Cross Railway Station. These two lines merge with the East Coast Mainline north of Leeds.
