The area around Edmonton has been inhabited as early as 12,000 years ago. In more recent times, the first European to visit it was explorer Anthony Henday in 1754. A few decades later, Fort Edmonton, established on the north bank of the North Saskatchewan River in 1795, became the precursor of modern Edmonton.

Budget Travel to Edmonton
Edmonton International Airport (YEG), located in Leduc County, 10 kilometers south of downtown Edmonton, is the main international gateway to the city.
Edmonton Airport is not served by a public bus. However, there is an airport shuttle that ply a route between the airport and downtown Edmonton for $15 one way and $25 return. You can make the same journey on taxi for $60. The drive between the airport and the city is just about half an hour, depending on traffic.
Budget Travel within Edmonton
The Edmonton Transit System comprises the Edmonton LRT trains and buses. There is only a single line on the LRT. It starts at Clareview Station in the northeast of the city, and is presently being expanded south to Century Park. In addition to the train, buses provide feeder services.
The Edmonton LRT fare is $2.75 per ride. There is also a 10-ticket booklet for $22.00, and a day-pass for unlimited rides for $8.25. The tickets are available at the vending machines at the LRT stations.
