Eindhoven (map) is the fifth largest city of the Netherlands and the most populous city in the region of North Brabant. It covers 88.84 sq km (34.3 sq mi) and has a population of 214,000 (2011 estimate) within a metropolitan area with some 750,000 inhabitants.

The earliest mention of Eindhoven in history was in 1232, when it received its city rights from Duke Hendrik I of Brabant. Originally called Endehoven, it was a small market town until the 19th century, when it became a center for the tobacco and textile industry.

In 1891, an electrical company began producing light bulbs in Eindhoven. That company, Philips, grew to become a multi-national giant in the lighting, electrical and electronics industries, and single-handedly fueled the growth of Eindhoven, which grew bigger than all the other cities in the region.
Today visitors to Eindhoven can still walk its well-preserved Old Town, with its canals and moats.

Eindhoven has its own airport, located about 5 km from downtown. Ryanair flies to Eindhoven from London Stansted as well as a number of other cities in Europe. From the airport, you can take Bus 401 to Eindhoven train station and bus station in the city center.
