More on Ellesmere Port

Ellesmere was once a village named Netherpool. It was developed in the 18th century, when the area began to industrialize, and canals were built to improve navigation and transportation. Netherpool was renamed Port of Ellesmere, and then Ellesmere Port. The area has been inhabited for over a thousand years, and settlemetns around the area all appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086.

The opening of the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894 spurred the development of Ellesmere Port. Within a short time, it had expanded to absorb surrounding villages such as Great and Little Sutton, Hooton, Whitby, Overpool and Rivacre.

Ellesmere Port remains a highly industrial town today, with an oil refinery and a petrochemical plant. There is also a car factory producing the Astra.
