Entry Requirements for Australia
All visitors to Australia are required to hold a passport that is valid for the intended period of stay. Except for New Zealand nationals, everybody else needs to apply for a visa before they arrive. There are a few types available now:
- Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)
This is a tourism and business visa that is available to people holding the passports of Brunei, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States. It is available online at the Australian Electronic Travel Authority, and can be applied online or through your travel agent.
- eVisitor
This type of visa is available for people holding the passports of the European Union countries, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. These visas are free and is available at the Australian Department of Immigration.
- Non-electronic Visas
If you do not qualify for the ETA or eVisitor visa, you will need to apply for the regular visa from the Australian consulate or embassy.
Customs and Quarantine
Australia imposes a strict quarantine requirement on all animal and vegetable products, including all foods, wooden products, seeds, flowers, plants, pets. Even permitted food items must be declared to customs. Failure to declare may incur you an on-the-spot fine of A$220.
There is no restriction non the amount of money you bring in or out of the country, but you must declare if you are carrying A$10,000 or more into or out of Australia.
