The history of Erfurt goes back to 742 AD, when it appeared as Erphesfurt, making it the oldest town in Thuringia. It was a trading town in the Middle Ages. The Black Death in the 14th century saw an early wave of pogroms against the Jews in Erfurt, when about 100 were rounded up and killed. In 1802, Erfurt became part of the Kingdom of Prussia.

Erfurt has an intact medieval city centre that suffered only limited damage during the Second World War. Its main attractions include the Erfurt Cathedral (also called Mariendom) and the Severikirche. These two sights stand side by side, and together form the icon of the city. The bridge across the Gera, Krämerbrücke, is also another tourist sight in Erfurt.

Going to Erfurt

By Plane
Erfurt Airport only receives a number of flights, among them the Air Berlin connection with London. By Train
Erfurt Hauptbahnhof (main train station) gets regular train services connecting it with Berlin, Munich, Leipzig, Dresden and Frankfurt. By Road
Erfurt is encircled by Autobahn A71 that runs north-south and Autobahn A4 going east-west. The federal motorways Bundesstraße 4 and Bundesstraße 7 connects Erfurt with other nearby towns.

Exploring Erfurt

Your first choice is to take Bus-Number-Eleven, also called your "own two feet". The city is compact and almost made for walking. There are also trams running around the city which you can take to cover some distances at a faster speed.
