More on Exmouth

Exmouth is believed to have been inhabited as early as the 5th century, based on the discovery of Byzantine coins in the area. The town itself dates back to two parishes, Littleham and Withycombe Raleign, both established in pre-Saxon times. Traces of human settlement has also been found dating to the 11th century when the place was known as Lydwicnaesse.

In the early days, Exmouth enjoyed only limited port activity, in part due to the shallow waters on the approach to its quay, and also due to proximity to Exeter, which controlled all estuary traffic. As such the town that we know today did not actually come about until the 18th century when it developed as one of the first and oldest holiday resort in Devon. At that time, only the well-to-do could afford to vacation in Exmouth. This changed when the railway line was built, allowing more people to visit the town.
