Filton is a small town in South Gloucestershire, in Gloucestershire, England. It is located about 7 km (4 mi) to the north of Bristol. The town has a population of around 10,000 people (2012 estimate).

More on Filton

Although it dates back to 1147, Filton remains a small farming town right into the 20th century. It only began to develop in the 20th century, particularly in the years between the two world wars. In 1907 it became the northern terminus of the Bristol Tramways.

Today Filton is noted for its aviation industry which began here in 1910. Initially the aeroplane manufacture facility was housed in the sheds of the Bristol Tramways. Today aircraft manufacturing facility is owned by Airbus.

Visiting Filton

Take the M4 motorway from London until Exit 19. Continue a short distance down the M32 motorway, then take Exit 1 and continue west on the A4174 road until you arrive in Filton.


Places of Interest in Filton

  1. Filton Aerodrome
    Airfield where the first Concorde prototype flight took place in 1969. The last ever Concorde flight was from Heathrow Airport to here on 26 November, 2003. It is now a visitor attraction at Filton Aerodrome.

  2. Filton Church
    12th century church in the heart of town, today a Grade II listed building.
